People of Calvary Cemetery

Pioneer Memorial Park has approximately 147 headstones from the old Calvary Cemetary. Originally the cemetery had between 1,600 and 2,000 graves.

Seven of the people buried in the cemetary to show the variety of people buried in the cemetery. Some were important to San Diego and others to the cemetery. Some are just interesting. Each has a headstone in the Pioneer Memorial except Moriarty because his headstone was lost during the conversion from Calvary Cemetery to Pioneer Park and was recently discovered by a 4th grade Seminar student at Grant School in the cayon behind the park.

Albert Mayrhofer

Albert Vincent Mayrhofer was born September 28, 1889. His wife’s name was Marie L. Mayrhofer and his son’s name was Albert V. Mayrhofer Jr. Albert was the president of the California Historical Society. His work in San Diego to restore Calvary Cemetery was very important. He became the head of the restoration committee. While working there he persuaded the government to give money to repair the Cemetery. He was raising the money to buy materials for fixing Calvary Cemetery. He died May 2, 1948 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery. His wife did not let the people of San Diego put a headstone on top of his grave at first because of the condition of the cemetery.

Edward Moriarty

Edward Moriarty was born in 1841 and died in 1887. Nothing else is known about him, except written burial records that say he died in 1890.  A tombstone fragment found in the canyon behind Grant School proves otherwise. This fragment was discovered by one of the students in our class in February 2005.
